INTRODUCTION

TO THIS PROJECT

For this project, it has two stages. The first stage is for development while the second stage is to finalise our designs. Unlike the previous projects, this project involves human ergonomics and we were also assigned 3 design ‘movement’. Among sliding, interlocking and folding, I was assigned with interlocking. I was then paired up with a partner and I had to base my designs on her requirements and her dimensions (such as the height , shoulder length and the amount of space that she might need to seat down etc...).

The following are her requirements :

  • ensure that there is privacy

  • have a table for her to do her work

  • if possible, have thicker walls for noise insulation

According to the brief, there are conditions to be met for this project as well. We have to build the model within the boundary of 1.2m by 1.2m. (if we really require more space, we are allowed to extend from only one side of the boundary to 1.5m. The space has to be able to accommodate to my partner's work, rest and play. She told me that she needs a desk to do her work and for her, watching movies and anime serves as play. When she needs to rest, she would just lie down and close her eyes. With these information, I decided to combine the rest and play area as it is both of these areas place similar importance to her.

DESIGN INTENT

BEHIND EACH PROTOTYPE

rest p1.jpg

As my partner wants privacy, I decided that I want to have two of the walls to be fully intact so as to ensure that she has the privacy which she has been seeking for. within the model, a table and chair has been included for her to do her work. I also wanted to include a backrest for her when she play. This led to the prototype as shown in the picture. The back rest had been made using the floor. My partner does not have to use much of her energy to move the pieces which gives her more convenience.

PROTOTYPE 1

Unlike the first prototype, the second prototype requires my partner to move a lot. She would have to move gigantic pieces of the model around so that she will be able to work rest and play. I did not managed to include a backrest for her during her play time but she can just use the two walls to serve as a back rest for her. Her rest and play area shall overlap, leaving her work area to be purely just an area for her to work. Based on previous assignments, she told me that she would need a relatively large work space so that she can work and concentrate better, which is why I made the table larger this time. I also included a little roof at the top so that it will be able to shelter her from the studio lights.

PROTOTYPE 2

For the third prototype, more privacy is provided. In order to form a table and chair, parts of the wall and floor will be foldable so that they can fold out to form surfaces that can act as a table and a chair when they interlock with one another. The back rest becomes an additional piece that is also able to form the table. with this, her work, play and rest area shall be separately cleanly from another. However, she may have to move more in order to assemble it.

PROBLEMS WITH THE

CURRENT DESIGNS

  • Design as of current, looks rigid.

  • Rather than just having the two walls for privacy, I can try using another way to provide my partner the privacy that she wants.

  • There is not much transformation going on within the space.

  • I should view my model and prototype as planes surfaces rather than tables and chairs as this would restrict my thinking.

  • The element of interlocking is not present. It should be occurring throughout the model.
