INTRODUCTION
TO THIS PROJECT
This project appears to be the most fun and interesting one as compared to the others. For this project, we were tasked to build models out of paper. The models were then thrown down the building from a certain height with specific requirements.
Some of the requirements are :
-
able to support the weight of a quail
egg (which will be provided by the
tutors)
-
Egg still has to be intact upon
landing
-
The model has to stay up in the air
for at least 3-5 seconds.
(With the quail egg)
-
recommended to use 100gsm paper
CHALLENGES THAT I FACED

The main difficulty which I faced for this project is that this is mainly trial and error. I cannot predict whether the models would work well or not. Due to factors such as the weather, there were chances that the results that I got from previous experiments may be inaccurate. This is why I had to continuously try out my models and if they do not work, I would have to come up with something new or improve from my previous prototype. This makes the project time-consuming but overall, I had a great time.
PROBLEMS WITH EACH
ATTEMPT AT THE PROTOTYPES

2nd attempt
The prototype is very unstable. When I tried to drop the prototype from the allocated location of the school building, it swung from left to right continuously until it reaches the ground. It was as if it were the pirate ship ride in amusement parks. The egg will definitely fall out. This is why I did not continue on the idea of this prototype.
3rd attempt
This time round, I decided to use butter paper as it is lighter as compared to normal paper. Once again, I threw the prototype and to my surprise, it overturned. There may not be enough butter paper or there are too many gaps which decreases the air resistance needed to help the prototype stay in the air for a longer period of time. Due to lack of time, I was unable to do more test with the butter paper.
5th attempt
Unlike the rest of the other prototypes, I decided to make this prototype shaped like a flower. By far it performed the best as it was very stable due to its heavy base. Even if I tried to drop it from the other side, it will turn over in mid-air and would always land as shown in the picture above. However, the base may be a little too heavy as it will always land within 3-4sec without the quail egg so I had to improve from this design so that it is able to land at a slower pace with the egg in it.
